Abstract This chapter presents texture-based volume rendering techniques that are used for visualizing three-dimensional data sets for creating high-quality special effects. The chapter begins with the implementation details of a very simple volume renderer, then continues to add advanced features to this base implementation. Advanced features include lighting, shadows, translucency, and others. The chapter is an overview of the field of texture-based volume rendering.
