Approximation Examples
Real Valued Functions Of Two Variables
The following pages each show a single real valued function of two variables, approximated by a series of linear
splines with increasing resolutions.
- Cosine Wave
- The graph of a rotational symmetric cosine wave.
- Ski-Doo Hood
- A surface reconstructed from scattered sample points resulting from a laser scan.
Vector Valued Functions Of Two Variables
The following pages each show a single RGB image, approximated by a series of linear splines with increasing
resolutions. Though the approximation algorithm might be interesting as yet another image compression
technique, I deliberately did not give the compression ratios for the linear spline representations, because I
have not found a good measure to compare the resolution-independent linear splines with the resolution-dependent
images yet.
- Golden Gate Bridge
- A photograph of the Golden Gate Bridge, taken by myself during a recent visit in San Francisco.
- Bernd Hamann
- A photograph of Professor Hamann, taken from his homepage.
- Oliver Kreylos
- A slightly-out-of-date photograph of myself, scanned in from my passport.
- Lena
- Arguably the most often used test case in works on image processing / image compression. But does anybody know
where it originally was taken from? (Hint: Follow this link to find out!)
